Trekking pilgrimage in Portugal

Experience the spiritual essence of the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela.

Trekking pilgrimage in Portugal description:

The Portuguese Way represents a road of great importance that connects Portugal to Spain. Discover this fascinating route step by step, overcoming the challenges you may encounter and immersing yourself in the rich cultural heritage to be visited along the way.

Remember that it is not necessary to complete the entire route to do the St. James way. You can choose an intermediate starting point and decide the number of stages or kilometers to walk. If you walk at least 100 kilometers, you will receive the Compostela as recognition upon your arrival at the majestic Cathedral of Santiago.

The Portuguese Way is the ideal option for those who wish to have a unique experience, discovering the culture of Portugal and Galicia. Starting from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, venture all the way to the Galician region. Along the way, you will pass through fascinating historic cities, overlooking beautiful rural areas that will leave a lasting impression in your memory.

The Portuguese Way offers a completely different experience than other roads, as it does not have steep climbs or obvious irregularities like the French Way. However, like its counterparts, it is steeped in rich ancient history and crosses beautiful natural landscapes, including enchanting forests, ancient villages, medieval bridges, cruises, rivers and “carballeiras.” Historically, this route has been an important route of cultural and commercial exchange. When you embark on the Camino, you will discover that not only devotion, but also social, economic and cultural relations have driven pilgrims along this route.

HIGHLIGHTS:

There are many pilgrimage routes to Santiago, but none is more meaningful and exciting than the “ancient Portuguese spiritual route of the Caminhos de Santiago.”

According to John Brierley, author of the bestseller “A Pilgrim’s Guide to the Camino de Santiago,” to walk the Portuguese Way is to take a journey through time, moving to an era of spiritual renewal and awakening. Despite its pagan, Roman and Christian roots, the Portuguese Caminhos are open to all, regardless of religion or lack thereof.

Welcome to our fascinating Portuguese way to Santiago de Compostela!

Tour Plan

1
Day 1 - Arrival in Porto
Arrival in Porto and transfer to Porrinho for the night.

2
Day 2-O Porriño – Redondela (10 miles / 16 Km)
This is another flowing stage with no major differences in level. The only exception is the area that connects the Albergue de Mos with the chapel of Santiaguiño. This area is famous for "chocos," a type of high quality cephalopods in these waters. You can eat chocos in many ways, but the most traditional ones are with rice, in their ink or in an "empanada."

3
Day 3 -Redondela – Pontevedra (11.8 miles / 19 Km)
This is a short stage with small, irregular areas near the beautiful Ría de Vigo. It is worth stopping to visit Rendondela's heritage treasures, such as Soutomaior Castle or the Roman bridge at Pontesampaio. The wisest idea is to end the stop in Pontevedra, because the city has a great historical heritage. Its old town has a nice atmosphere and you can have a snack or a drink here. Don't forget to visit the sanctuary of the Virgen Peregrina, a symbol of the city and a monument specifically dedicated to pilgrims. Traditional products of the city are fish, seafood (especially oysters, mussels, clams and "zamburiñas"). For dessert, you can find puff pastry stuffed with almonds.

4
Day 4 – Pontevedra – Caldas de Reis (11.8 miles / 19 Km)
This stretch of road passes through trails and villages, with the characteristic rural aspect of the Galician countryside. The road will cross several points along a national road (the N-550 road, which connects Pontevedra and Santiago de Compostela) zigzagging through fields and villages toward Caldas. This town has a history dating back thousands of years and, as the name suggests, is famous for its many hot springs. Try the empanada: with lamprey, tellin, sardines or meat. You will find authentic delicacies along the Portuguese way.

5
Day 5– Caldas de Reis – Padrón (10.5 miles / 17 Km)
In this area, you will change the province of Pontevedra to A Coruña. You will arrive in Padrón, where the present parish of Iria Flavia is located. The ancient Roman city had the same name and has a large port. According to legend, Iria Flavia was the place where St. James the Great began preaching. This would also be the place where his disciples (Theodore and Athanasius) landed, sailing in the stone boat with the remains of Santiago (St. James the Great) from Jerusalem. You are very close to the finish line. In addition, Padrón is also the birthplace of the most international Galician poet: Rosalía de Castro. In this village you can visit her house: Casa da Matanza. In Padrón, you have to taste the famous peppers, Padrón or Herbón peppers, with "tortilla," "raxo," or just the peppers. Whatever you choose, they taste delicious.

6
Day 6 – Padrón – Santiago de Compostela (13.6 miles / 22 Km)
On this last step, you will follow in the footsteps of Theodore and Athanasius, the disciples of James the Greater. They secretly gathered his remains and crossed the sea in a stone boat to Iria Flavia. According to legend, Bishop Theodomier discovered the apostle's remains and brought them to Compostela. You will walk the same route during this last stage, passing through villages and neighborhoods until you reach the capital and most monumental city of Galicia: Santiago de Compostela.
