Tour Plan

1
Day 1 - Arrival in Porto
Arrival in Porto, setup bicycles and overnight stay in Porto.

2
Day2 - Porto - Aveiro (Distance: 60km Elevation Gain: 500m)
With a panoramic view of the city of Porto, we begin our journey on the south side of the Rio Douro. Pedaling toward the ocean, we soon find a bike path that passes through nearby coastal towns, beaches and fishing villages. If we are lucky, we see heroic fishermen in their characteristic fishing boats paddling through the waves as they have been doing for hundreds of years. Predominantly flat, the route goes all the way to the Esmoriz Lagoon. A wooden footpath leads through dense reeds through this bird paradise. Shortly thereafter we’ll reach the huge Aveiro Lagoon and the remote end of our first leg near the Ria de Aveiro wetlands.
3
Day 3 - Aveiro - Mira (Distance: 37km Elevation Gain: 225m)
After a few kilometers along the lagoon we arrive in the urban region of Aveiro. The pretty center of Aveiro, known for its canals and gondolas as Portugal's Venice, is small but worth seeing. After leaving the city through the harbors, we reach the colorful vacation homes of Costa Nova. The lagoon on one side, the endless white beaches on the other, we pedal to the source of the lagoon in the Mira wetlands. Local fishermen and many seabirds compete for the delicious crabs and shells hiding in the mud. At the end of Ria de Aveiro, nature changes. Shady pine forests and freshwater ponds now characterize the landscape. A lovely country house directly on the shore of one of the lagoons is our next stay.

4
Day 4 - Mira - Figueira da Foz (Distance: 48km Elevation Gain: 750m)
We continue along water channels, first through several forests and then flat sand dunes. Several lagoons border our route along the coast. Near the shoreline we follow a lonely road through sand dunes and the remains of the endless pine forests burned in 2017. At the end of this road we arrive at the small village of Quiaios at the foot of the small Serra da Boa Viagem mountain range. From the village near sea level to the 260-meter summit will be our only real climb for today, so it is tough. The compensation we find in breathtaking endless views from the summit to the ocean and the flat landscape around. After a short rest we set off for the well-deserved descent. A beautiful scenic road takes us with spectacular views towards the ocean and the beaches and docks of Figueira da Foz.

5
Day 5 - Figueira da Foz - Sao Pedro de Moel ( Distance: 54km Elevation: 900m)
The historic center of Figueira invites you to stay, but remember that we have a long stage ahead. The bridge over Rio Mondego is a busy road, so it may be convenient to use the sidewalk when crossing. We continue southward on mostly flat terrain. To avoid the high traffic road, we take a detour that includes a mix of gravel paths, side roads, and a short section on the main road. After approximately 28 kilometers, we reach Estrada Atlântica, a scenic road running alongside the ocean, featuring a wide and comfortable cycling lane. Along this route, there are breathtaking views of the coastline, although only a few small sections remind us of the majestic forests that once covered the area for centuries before most of them were destroyed by a fire in 2016. Today, the landscape comprises vast dunes and low bushes intermingled with remnants of the former Pedragao forest. Adding to the diversity of this scenery is the charming Ervedeira lagoon, a perfect spot for a short break and a refreshing drink before continuing our journey along the cycling lane to our final destination, Sao Pedro de Moel.

6
Day 6 - Sao Pedro de Moel - Obidos ( Distance: 70km Elevation: 1450m)
From the imposing lighthouse at Sao Pedro de Moel we take the bike path along the Estrada Atlantica. Approaching the surfing hotspot Nazarè, the bike paths get lost here and there among the villages. With a few climbs we reach the upper part of Nazaré's historic center. From the lighthouse high above the famous surfers' waves in Canhao and the exceptional viewpoint Miradouro Suberco we descend to the center, ports and beaches of Nazaré. Along the coast more hills await us. First is Serra da Pescaria, which divides Nazaré from the charming Sao Martinho do Porto with a sharp climb and downhill ride. In the summer season Sao Martinho do Porto, located in a round bay, is a popular beach resort mainly for locals in the area. On the south side of this bay, Serra do Bouro awaits us with the next climb, from Sao Martinho Bay to the delta of the Rio Arelho River. Wide views along the coast and toward the forests make up for the effort. At Foz de Arelho beach and the beginning of Lagoa de Obidos it is time to say goodbye to the ocean. Along the lagoon and up and down the vineyards until we catch a glimpse of today's destination. Intact medieval walls surround the entire old town and turn the city into a large castle.
