The GR-50 Grande Rota Peneda-Gerês is one of the largest and most challenging trails in Portugal. With about 190 kilometers divided into 19 stages, the trail traverses the entire Peneda-Gerês National Park, offering complete immersion in mountain nature. Along the way, hikers encounter breathtaking landscapes, from oak forests to rocky peaks. The route reveals the rich history and culture of the region, with passages through historic villages, ancient shepherd trails and pilgrimage routes.

DAY 1: Arrival in Porto and transfer to Ameijoeira.
On the day of arrival in Porto, a private transfer will take you from the airport to Ameijoeira, where travelers will settle into a hotel and rest for the start of the trek the following day.

DAY 2: Stage 1 - Start of the trek: Ameijoeira - Castro Laboreiro (8.34 km | 3h | easy)
The first stage of GR 50, the Great Peneda-Gerês Route, begins at the border between Portugal and Spain, in Ameijoeira, in the parish of Castro Laboreiro. From the start, the route offers an immersion in the rich history and culture of the region. The trail follows ancient paths, used for centuries by local people for transhumance between brandas (summer grazing areas) and inverneiras (wintering areas). Along the way you can see the traditional architecture of the inverneiras, small villages built to house shepherds and their flocks during the colder months. One of the highlights of the stage is the crossing over the Roman bridge of Cava da Velha, an impressive piece of engineering that spans the Laboureiro River. The bridge is a testament to the historical importance of the region and the Romans' skill in building infrastructure. The stage also offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Laboreiro valleys and mountains. Upon reaching the higher levels, hikers are rewarded with landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see, allowing them to appreciate the natural beauty of the region. At the end of the stage, hikers reach the village of Castro Laboreiro, where they can visit the Museum Center and Casa Castreja to learn about the history and cultural heritage of the region. DAY 3: Stage 2 - Castro Laboreiro - Lamas de Mouro - Peneda (15.2 km | 6h | moderate)
The Great Peneda-Gerês Route, in its first two stages, invites hikers to fully immerse themselves in the lush nature and rich history of the region. Starting in Castro Laboreiro, the route winds along ancient country lanes, offering vast landscapes and contact with wildlife. After a gradual climb, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of a lush forest. The journey continues past the Portela de Lamas de Mouro, a historic landmark, and into the deep valleys of the Mouro River, where the tranquility of nature can be felt. The ascent to Portela do Lagarto is a challenge that reveals breathtaking landscapes, and the subsequent descent leads through oak groves and agricultural fields, revealing the rich diversity of the region. All along the way, traces of human occupation over the centuries can be found, such as old stone houses and watermills, testifying to the intrinsic link between man and nature in this region. DAY 4: Stage 3 - Peneda - Adrão/ Sr.a da Paz - Mezio (18.7 km | 7h | moderate)
The stage of the Great Peneda-Gerês Route that connects Peneda to Adrão and then Adrão to Mezio offers a rich experience of immersion in the nature of Alto Minho. Starting in Peneda, the route winds through rural paths, oak forests and ancient brands, revealing the beauty of agricultural mosaics and the harmony between man and nature. Crossing the bridge over the Peneda River marks the beginning of a journey that takes us through bucolic landscapes and traditional villages such as Beleiral and Tibo. The climb to the village of Tibo and the panoramic view from the lookout are memorable moments. Heading towards Adrão, the road takes us to the tranquility of the Senhor da Paz Chapel, the starting point of the next stage. The second part of the stage, which begins in Adrão, takes us through ancient “brandas” such as Bordença and Ínsuas de Soajo, revealing the history of pastoralism in the region. The walk continues along historic paths, such as the ancient pavement that leads to the ruins of the Casa do Guarda Florestal de Entre Outeiros. The landscape, marked by the presence of granite and contrasts between native vegetation and areas burned by fire, evokes the strength of nature and the resilience of the region. Starting at Porta do Mezio, the route leads hikers along winding paths through forests, farmlands and traditional villages. After visiting the Mezio Equestrian Center and the village of Vilar de Suente, the route follows ancient farm trails lined with stone walls and rich vegetation. The arrival in Soajo, with its impressive granaries and preserved historic center, marks the end of the first part of this journey. The second leg, starting at the Soajo fairgrounds, follows trails that reveal the beauty of the countryside, with highlights such as the Soajo agricultural vein and the crossing of the Lima River. Covering 16.5 km, the route invites hikers on a journey through beautiful mountain landscapes, historic villages and a rich cultural heritage. Starting in Cabril, the route winds along ancient trails, crossing rivers, climbing mountains and descending valleys. Along the way, the region's rich biodiversity is revealed in leafy forests, flower-filled fields and crystal-clear streams. The villages, with their granite houses, chapels, fountains and mills, tell stories of a rural past and preserve centuries-old traditions. Highlights include the imposing beauty of Fojo do Lobo de Xertelo, the tranquility of villages such as Chelo and Azevedo, and panoramic views of the Cávado da Cela River valley. The stage culminates in Sirvozelo, a village with a special charm, where large blocks of granite are intertwined with traditional architecture. The walk, although challenging, repays the efforts with the opportunity to get in touch with the nature and history of the region, making the experience unforgettable. DAY 11: Stage 10 - Sirvozelo - Outeiro (11 km | 4h | moderate)
The journey between Sirvozelo and Outeiro takes us along a route full of bucolic landscapes and rich cultural heritage, with the Paradela reservoir as a constant backdrop. Starting from Sirvozelo, the route follows rural paths, crossing cultivated fields and oak forests. We follow the stone walls bordering the land, witnesses to an agricultural past. Along the way, the Paradela reservoir is revealed in its entirety, offering breathtaking views and inviting contemplation. After crossing the Paradela Dam, with its imposing rock structure, we enter more winding paths. Villages such as Paradela do Rio, Loivos, Fiães do Rio and Paredes do Rio welcome us with their stone houses, chapels and rural heritage elements such as mills and granaries. Each town preserves Barroso's identity, with its traditions and customs passed down from generation to generation. The route presents us with a variety of landscapes: from cultivated fields to oak forests, from the shores of the reservoir to mountain slopes. Starting from the charming village of Outeiro, with its stone houses and views of the Paradela reservoir, we enter a labyrinth of paths that wind through cultivated fields and oak forests. Accompanied by the sound of the Meão River, we cross historic bridges and explore the region's rich biodiversity. The highlight of the trip is undoubtedly the Pitões das Júnias waterfall. A suspended footbridge leads us to this spectacle of nature, where crystal-clear water cascades over a cliff, creating a scene of rare beauty. The panoramic view of the region, with the Gerês Mountains in the background, is simply breathtaking. Arriving in Pitões das Júnias, we are greeted by a bucolic setting, with shale houses nestled between cultivated fields and forests. DAY 13: Stage 12 - Pitões das Júnias - Tourém (12.5 km | 4h30 | moderate)
Embarking on an adventure that crosses borders, the stage between Pitões das Júnias and Tourém invites us to immerse ourselves in the lush nature and rich history of Barroso and Alto Minho. Starting from the charming village of Pitões das Júnias, we enter a labyrinth of paths that wind through mountainous landscapes, oak forests and extensive cultivated fields. Accompanied by birdsong and the murmur of streams, we enjoy panoramic views as far as the eye can see. After crossing the border with Spain, we enter wild and unspoiled territory where nature reigns supreme. The trail takes us to high altitudes, offering breathtaking views of the Gerês Mountains and the Mourela Plateau. The feeling of freedom and adventure intensifies along the way. Upon returning to Portugal, we are greeted by bucolic scenery, with traditional villages and agricultural landscapes that transport us to a more remote era. The arrival in Tourém, with its stone houses and narrow streets, marks the end of this unforgettable journey. Along the way we find traces of the region's history and culture, such as megalithic dolmens, which connect us to the ancient civilizations that inhabited these lands. DAY 14: Private transfer to Porto airport and departure
The day has come to bid farewell to Portugal with the hope of returning soon to discover all its riches. After a good breakfast, a private transfer will take you back to Porto airport.
